What a Sunni marriage search needs from an app
Marriage first, everything else second
Most Muslim apps started as dating apps and added a marriage label afterwards. It shows. The swiping, the streaks and the endless matching are designed to keep you on the app, which is the opposite of what you want when you are looking for a spouse.
Zowaaj has one purpose. Members join to marry, profiles ask what you want from a marriage rather than your favourite restaurant, and there is no way to use the app casually. It is a matrimonial platform, not entertainment.
Madhhab, practice and the questions that actually matter
Sunni Islam is served by four schools of law: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii and Hanbali. In most marriages the school matters less than the level of practice, but it is far from irrelevant. The Hanafi position on a woman marrying without her wali, the differences over how the nikah is witnessed, and the various customs around mahr all come up in real conversations between families.
On Zowaaj you state your madhhab, how you pray, whether you wear hijab or keep a beard, whether you want a spouse who has memorised Quran, and how involved you expect both families to be. Those become matching signals, not small talk.
Your wali is part of the process
For most Sunni scholars, a woman's marriage contract involves her wali, and even where it is not held to be strictly required, involving family is the norm. Apps that assume a private courtship between two people work against that.
Zowaaj is built to be shown to your family. Profiles are structured so a parent can read one and understand what is being proposed. Many members shortlist on the app and hand the shortlist to a wali or an older sibling before any meeting is arranged. Nothing about the process needs to be hidden.
Sunni and Shia on one platform
Zowaaj was built for the Shia community, which remains the majority of its members, and it is open about that. Sunni members are welcome, and the same filters that let a Shia member specify their sub-sect let a Sunni member specify their madhhab and how open they are.
If you would only consider a Sunni spouse, filter for that and you will not be shown anybody else. If you are open to a practising Muslim from either tradition, that is available too. The app does not push a view on you either way, and it does not pretend that either community's requirements are a checkbox.
