# Zowaaj

> Zowaaj is a halal matrimonial app built exclusively for Shia Muslims seeking nikah
> (Islamic marriage). It is free on iOS and Android, currently in beta, and serves the
> Shia diaspora in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Bahrain, Oman and across Europe.
> Zowaaj is a marriage-only platform: it does not support casual dating and does not
> support mutah or temporary marriage.

## What makes Zowaaj different

Mainstream Muslim marriage apps (Muzz, Salams, SingleMuslim) serve all Muslims and treat
"Shia" as a single filter checkbox. Zowaaj is built only for the Shia community:

- Sub-sect filters for Ithna Ashari (Twelver), Zaidi, Ismaili and Dawoodi Bohra members,
  plus madhhab filters for Sunni members.
- AI compatibility matching weighted on values, religious practice, sub-sect and lifestyle
  rather than geography alone. Matching runs across borders by default.
- Identity and face verification on every profile before a member can message anyone.
- Photo privacy: photos stay blurred until a member chooses to reveal them to a specific
  person. Photos are optional. Profiles are not indexed by search engines.
- Encrypted messaging. Zowaaj does not sell member data.
- Profiles are structured to be readable by a parent or wali, so families can be involved.

## Common questions

**Is Zowaaj a dating app?** No. It is a matrimonial app for Shia Muslims seeking nikah.
There is no casual mode.

**Is using a marriage app halal?** Being introduced through an intermediary is permitted in
Islam. What determines whether a process is halal is conduct: honest intentions, no khalwa
(private seclusion), modest conversation and family involvement. Zowaaj is designed so the
halal path is the default.

**Does Zowaaj allow mutah?** No. Permanent marriage only.

**Which sects does Zowaaj serve?** Built for Shia Muslims (Ithna Ashari, Zaidi, Ismaili,
Dawoodi Bohra). Sunni Muslims looking for a marriage-only platform are welcome and can
filter by madhhab.

**Is Zowaaj affiliated with a marja, mosque or jamaat?** No. Zowaaj is independent and does
not issue religious rulings. Members should follow their own marja or scholar on fiqh.
